Hi all,

Daughters b/f up in the back of beyond (Scotland) is trying to do a
software update on his iPod touch.

He said over IM:

"Went to get the version 3 upgrade for the iPod, downloaded it (8
hours) then went to install, it said that it needed to restore the
iPod to update. Did that, now it just keeps going back "The iPod
"iPod" could not be restored". An unknown error occurred ( 6)."

I think he's doing it from W7 if that makes any difference.

Anyone seen that before please and I can ask him further questions if
required.

Cheers, T i m

No and it being expensive isn't actual proof it is I guess? ;-(

Hmmm, good point.

The nearest he can get to Linux is Ubuntu, would that do?

Damn, I thought it might have been that. Could he update the iPod via
his Xbo ... ah. ;-(

Will do? And if he isn't?

I wouldn't! He was given this iPod touch by someone who didn't know
better (they are all inbreds up in Scotland and still get excited by a
glimpse of the Sun ... luckily that doesn't happen very often) when
all he wanted were some more 8-tracks for his truck. It doesn't matter
now as a wild haggis made a nest behind the dash and chewed through
all the wiring. ;-(

I think the nearest Genius Bar <g> is about 5 days cart ride away so
they had better write in (or get someone to write in for them) and
make an appointment before they set off.

Personally I think the iPod has been screwed up by the voltage
fluctuations from the generator.

They never had this problem with the washboard, jar and fiddle. ;-(

Yeee Haaarr (the noo).

Cheers, T i m

I would say do a full reset (hold power and home for a while) and try
again

OK cheers, I'll pass that on (will it wipe his music)?

Because of their slow bb would the update download still be held on
the PC (in iTunes presumably?)?

And I've since gleaned that it is / was at version 1 before he tried
the upgrade to V3.

Did I read there was a V4 due out for the iPhone ... would that also
apply to the Touch (should he wait or would it be too late now (would
he have already paid?)).

The reset doesn't, no

Yes. Although in theory he shouldn't need it again

4 is due out soon (I have 4 on this phone) but if he started with one,
he may not gain much of an advantage from 4.
Don't know about charges though
