Do you not have autokill on hogwasher? It killfiles a post, and any post
that comes from it. Generally when you have a thread that goes to this
point, there isn't much point seeing further!

An ideal option would be 'autokill for 4 posts or so' - just in case.

Newswatcher had a weighted kill.
You could give certain posters a large positive weight,
so they were visible also in killed threads.

slrn's scoring does that sort of thing wonderfully (though not Woody's
`kill for four posts', or certainly not without a bit of hackery).

Agent (Windows) has options for "[]delete filter after [n] days []of
inactivity", and a visible inactivity counter, which works nicely. I
know some Mac newsreaders have similar, but I don't know which.

In slrn you can set a scorefile entry to expire at a certain date
or after N days. That's still not as granular[1] as Woody's suggestion,
but there we go.
