From: Henrik (Hear) on 17 Mar 2008 10:51 Ritch, According to several documents Ive read, Kerry might be right. From the manual: For Windows users: To access the LaCie Ethernet Disk mini or Ethernet Big Disk using Microsoft Windows, look in My Network Places. By default, the LaCie Ethernet Disk mini will be named "EDmini" under Workgroup. When you attempt to access a share, you will be asked to enter a username and a password. The drive Is installed on the network as a network connected unit with Its own user access. Its not a domain connected unit and doesnt have the user account that NTBackup Is using. Its using its wn built in credentials. Note. When reading several manualls, they state that SBS2003 and Windows Server 2003 are not supported systems. A suggestion: In the manualls there Is an options that gives you possibility to mapp the drive to a letter In Explorer. If this is done on your SBS (though its not a supported OS), try to backup that drive thru the letter, not by using UNC path. Coorect me If im wrong here, but i think the credentials used when mapping the drive gives the NTBackup account possibility to write to the drive when mapped. If Im wrong i hope someone can correct me. Also note that, the mapped drive Is only mapped when logged on to the machine, the connected drive disconnects by default when logging out. -- Henrik Arenblad, MCP SBS, "Henrik (Hear)" <hear01(a)remove-this-hotmail.com> wrote in message news:uadEPzDiIHA.4468(a)TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > Ritch, > Whats the modell nr of your drive? > -- > Henrik Arenblad, MCP SBS, > > > "Kerry Brown" <kerry(a)kdbNOSPAMsys-tems.c*a*m> wrote in message > news:7AE54A0C-C3E8-40C0-8582-F3A3334B1971(a)microsoft.com... >> I'm guessing it's a permissions problem. From: Kerry Brown on 17 Mar 2008 11:05 It's a common problem with low cost networked drives (I hesitate to call them a NAS device). They use embedded Linux with Samba Server for file sharing. Active Directory is not supported. From: Russ (SBITS.Biz) on 17 Mar 2008 13:42 Actually some NAS do have AD Support, and XFS is just the Linux File system And that's not the issue . It's more like Permissions. Like you are not logged into the NAS before the backup starts You will either have to link the NAS with AD *Unknown if it can do this Or Make sure path is accessible with permissions during backup Russ -- SBITS.Biz Microsoft Gold Certified Partner Microsoft Certified Small Business Specialist. From: Kerry Brown on 17 Mar 2008 23:09 I've never been able to get the SBS backup to work with a Samba Server unless the Samba Server supports AD. The device in question doesn't support AD so it's unlikely it will ever work. You can get NTBackup to work if you are logged on and have a drive mapped to a share on the Samba Server. Very few low end NAS devices support AD. The cheapest I know of is this one. http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=79 Which is around $350.00 without a drive. The lowest cost LaCie NAS that supports AD is around $750.00. -- Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience: Systems Administration http://www.vistahelp.ca/phpBB2/ "Russ (SBITS.Biz)" <support(a)REMOVETHIS.sbits.biz> wrote in message news:eKq2$YFiIHA.4744(a)TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > Actually some NAS do have AD Support, > > and XFS is just the Linux File system > And that's not the issue . > > It's more like Permissions. > Like you are not logged into the NAS before the backup starts > You will either have to link the NAS with AD > *Unknown if it can do this > > Or Make sure path is accessible with permissions during backup > > Russ > > -- > > SBITS.Biz > Microsoft Gold Certified Partner > Microsoft Certified Small Business Specialist. > MCP, MCPS, MCNPS, (MCP-SBS) > North America Remote SBS2003 Support - http://www.SBITS.Biz > Information on Small Business Server 2008 - http://www.sbs2008.com > Information on Essentials Business Server - http://www.ebs2008.com > > > > - > > "Kerry Brown" <kerry(a)kdbNOSPAMsys-tems.c*a*m> wrote in message > news:CF75312A-4588-4D7B-84C1-A89B090BEF07(a)microsoft.com... >> It's a common problem with low cost networked drives (I hesitate to call >> them a NAS device).
