(a) I'm glad I don't live next door to them Anyone with speakers like that won't be annoying to the neighbours (well, not very often). Remember that you get speakers like that because you want really good clear sound - it's gear for audiophiles, for /strange/ audiophiles who will then connect those huge speakers to a 10W amplifier and be very happy with the result. If you want loud thumping bass, you get a different rig. For all that the outside speakers are *huge*, they don't actually kick out a lot of bass. Adequate - so I'm told - but not excessive like you find in car stereos. > and (b) What > are the small piles of wooden building blocks inside the bottom parts > for, I wonder? Getting the sound `just right'. That sort of speaker is a bit finicky about the fine constructional details - the curves have to be very precise, and then you end up with odd resonances no matter what you do. My guess is that the blocks clobber a nasty resonance and maybe improve sound dispersal (but I doubt it, 'cos the open end of the horn down there is mostly concerned with the lower end of the frequency range, so I gather). They're only noisy if you turn 'em up loud. My speakers are pretty much exactly the same loudness as those illustrated, missing deep bass aside. And when they're running at less than a watt input power, you can't hear 'em outside the house but you can hear them for music enjoyment inside the house. 5W rms - oh boy, /that's/ noisy. The first time I tried to find out what input power gave what loudness, I concluded that 3W rms was probably a bit too much for neighbourly comfort. How so? If it was a joke, he's smiling. If it wasn't a joke, he's not smiling. Superposition, until the jokeness is collapsed. -- Pd |
