Ahhh I shall try it longer next time. Sure is handier than hauling the plug
out of the wall each time! And a lot more civilized!

What works for me is holding the power button in for a 3 count, letting
go, waiting a bit and then giving it a regular push. I think the problem
is that sometimes the computer looks dead when it is only the display
that is not working, and this causes the correct procedure for rising
from the dead to fail.

Your not alone. I have had trouble waking from Sleep and even getting a
good start after a Shut Down. Holding in the button was a waste of
time. Apple really screwed the pouch with the OS X 10.5.6 Combo updater

The last trick I tried that seems to work was to remove the power plug
from the back of the Intel iMac and all external connections. Wait a
few minutes and restart. I just did it and manage to put it to sleep
and even woke it up. Try it .... the price is right

As a follow up.... my sleep and startup issues are history. Pulling
the plug and all external connections to the Intel iMac did the job.

Sounds like the problem was likely a USB or Firewire malfunction then.
