I just checked the Software Update, and realized that it's been telling me
that the system update it wants to install is the Combo for 10.5.6, not the
Standard. IIRC, previous updates it offered were the Standard ones.

Is it offering to install the 10.5.6 Combo because I'm an "update skipper"
-- still at 10.5.4, having repeatedly postponed its previous offers to
install 10.5.5?

Yep.

Two questions:

1. It seems that the Combo it's offering is the same as the downloadable
one, based on its size. In other words, while Software Update only downloads
....errr..."portions" of the Standard one, depending on what your specific
machine requires, there is no such similar "tailoring to your system" with
the Combo, is that correct?

2. You had previously said:

"I'm still waiting for the waters to settle a bit before I apply the
latest update. And when i do, it'll definitely be the
manually-downloaded Combo updater."

What does "waiting for the waters to settle" mean? Are you suggesting that
Apple likely will be re-issuing the Standard and Combo updates, modified to
address the problems folks seem to be having?

(My intent is to follow your suggestion to first install the Combo before
embarking on an Archive and Install to address the problems I've been
experiencing. But I certainly don't want to do that until I can be assured
that the update won't introduce its own set of (additional) problems.)

Unknown. I've seen at least one person suggest Software Update detects
your particular architecture and installs updates for that particular
architecture. I believe the 10.5.6 combo updater is universal, so I'm
not sure if this is the case for this update.

I'm reading reports of how the update has gone wrong for various people,
and waiting until i feel relatively sure I won't experience the major
issues, and I know how to recover should I experience any problems.

Apple has done this in the past, so waiting also gives Apple time to do
this if needed.

Well then, I may very well wait until either Apple does something, or you
finish (and, hopefully, post) your assessment, whichever comes first.
