What does the Connection Doctor window (click Show Details) say about
the SMTP connection? The output's kind of complicated but you may spot
something...

The annoying thing is I had them set up once before! I'll try again and
then see if I can get this Connection Doctor to show while it's trying to
connect to the server during the setup process

Is your ISP BT then... I assume you can get your email but can't send
through BT's SMTP.

I'm on Virgin now and have a BT Connect account I've kept and it works
fine through Virgin's SMTP as they allow you to quote any send/return
address. I do recall having problems at times with email when I was on
BT as you could only quote a BT mail address - so you need to check
you're quoting the right return address.

The authentication looks like it should be set too but I can't recall
having to do that.

I am with BT but I can't even get the account set up. When its checking the
servers during the setup process its okay with the incoming server
mail.btinternet.com but it fails when checking outgoing even though its the
same server. I changed it to smtp.btinternet.com as well to try it but that
failed as well.

A quick google suggests the outgoing server should be
mail.btinternet.com. *But* you have to authenticate to it, and setting
that up is a little non-obvious in Mail.

In Mail's Account Information tab for your BT account, change the
"Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):" setting to "Edit SMTP Server List...".

Then highlight the mail.btinternet.com line. In the Advanced tab, you
get to choose how to authenticate. Set this to (apparently) your email
address (User Name field) and password. Select "Password"
authentication.

When you OK and get back to the account information screen, be sure to
select that server in your "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" popup menu.

I'm not a BT user so can't help much more I'm afraid.
