I have been trying to add an email account a btinternet.com address. I have
done it automatically and it didn't work also tried to do it manually and it
still didn't work. I thought that I had put the correct information in by
looking what was set up for it using Entourage but I'm obviously missing
something. Anyone any ideas what it might be?

One thing that tripped me up was that where Mail's Accounts preferences
page asks you for a User Name it seems to need the whole email address,
not just the name. I don't know whether this is something Mail does or
whether it's just my mail server that needs it, but if I put in just
the name the connection is always refused.

I think I did try that but I'll have another go, thanks.

user name on mine is just the first part of the address and it works on
my btconnect account, which may be same format as btinternet. So my
settings are:

description: bt
email address: [name]@btconnect.com
full name: first name surname

Incoming mail server: pop3(a)btcnnect.com
user name: [name]
password: xxxxxxxxx

Outgoing SMTP - whatever yours is....

Yes if I remember correctly btconnect was/is btinternet but 'business'.
Interestingly my outgoing server which works on Entourage is
mail.btinternet.com which is the same as the incoming server. I'll try
putting smtp instead
