I must be missing something here as I don't have a Account Information tab
for the BT account to change the Outgoing Mail Server as because it doesn't
get set up in the first place there is nothing showing for it in the Account
information the only account there is my mac one. You would have thought it
would have set it up and then I might have had a problem 'sending' if the
information wasn't correct but it just keeps 'checking' forever on the
sending server and I have to cancel.

Oh I see, you're stuck in the account creation assistant ("wizard" in
Windows-speak). Does it show a dialog with "Setup Manually", "Cancel"
and "Continue" buttons? If so, I'd say choose the setup manually button.

Right I just left it 'testing' for ages and when I went back it had
apparently accepted it, but when I was checking the details it came up with
another problem which is apparently to do with the mac accounts (me and mac)
which I didn't know there was a problem with anyway. Both these accounts
use the same password (so does the BT one) and it says no 2 servers can use
the same password! Anyway I cannot 'send' with the BT one anyway neither.
This is very hard work :-(

Christ it really is, isn't it? Is it always that complicated in
Mail.app? I've set up a couple, and I don't remember it being that
horrible. It's the blessed forgetfulness of old age, clearly.

I think Mail knows about a lot of ISPs and tries to do the right thing
when you give it your email address. Thunderbird does something
similar. So in most cases you don't get that non-obvious (but
powerful!) UI.

It all falls apart when the ISP changes things at their end. BT have
switched over to using Yahoo! for email, which might explain things.
