The ord processor document shows extension .wps. Going to open office
file/open I cannot see which file type to use. There is no .wps.

That's a Works Word Processor file, but everyone (including me) assumed
you meant Word, heh.

Assuming you're using Windows, one option is to convert the Works file
to a Word file using Microsoft's tool at
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=bf41401e-70fa-465d-ae2e-cf44dbf05297>
and then use OpenOffice on the converted file.

If you have Works installed, saving the file as .rtf should also allow
OpenOffice to open it.

Another (better, IMO) option is to switch from the OpenOffice app from
openoffice.org to the enhanced Go-OO version from
<http://www.go-oo.org/>. I haven't tried it with .wps files, but it's
supposed to handle them without having to convert them to Word files
first. In general it handles Microsoft files better.

My post clearly said microsoft word processor, but still haven't found the
answer.

The term you used; "MS word processor", is generic.

"Microsoft Word" is the name of a program that happens to be a "word
processor".

"Microsoft Works" is the name of an office suite of programs that also
contains a "word processor".

"OpenOffice.org" is the name of an office suite of programs that also
contains a "word processor" called "Writer".

A word processor is any program that formats text and graphics into a
document format used especially in office letter and documents formation.

Files with filenames ending in the suffix ".wps" are "Microsoft Works"
files, not "Microsoft Word" files.

OpenOffice cannot convert these files without them being 1st converted
to a format that OpenOffice does understand, such as Microsoft Word
(.doc) or Rich Text (.rtf) formats.

If you don't have a copy of MS Works, or MS Word, then you can try as
"Q" has already suggested, the program called "Go-OO" which is said to
open and convert MS Works .wps files directly (see link above).
