It's the carrier unlocker for 3GS phones. It's available in Cydia, and
automatically applied by PwnageTools.

If you're using a legit carrier, you don't need a carrier unlock. So
you (as in *you* rather than generic) can ignore all references to
them.

http://www.hacktheiphone.com/ covers an awful lot.

And inside Cydia, the "Upgrading to 3.x.x? Read This" on the front
screen is pretty informative too.

Just to muddy the waters a wee bit, there's also the prospect of iPhone OS
4.0, which (a) will probably need a whole new set of Jailbreaking code, and
(b) may in some cases get rid of the -need- to Jailbreak. If OS4.0 allows
users to replace the system sounds then I'm personally not going to need to
Jailbreak, as that's all I ever use it for.

I must admit I wouldn't like to go back to not having SBSettings. I like
proSwitcher, but I could do without it, but SBSettings is not something
I would want to lose.

Yes, that's entirely correct. PwnageTools is also primarily a
jailbreaker, but because it's a complete OS builder, will
automatically include the correct carrier unlock for your particular
phone if you answer "no" to the "do you have an iPhone contract that
would activate normally through iTunes?" question.

And if you say "yes" then change your mind, you need to add an
unlocker at a later date through Cydia.

(checks) Nope, no mention at all. Tch.

With a 1st gen, you're unlocked - there's no need for a special tool
for it, all the jailbreakers unlock the 1st gen directly.

http://www.hackthatphone.com/firmware.html points you to
Settings/General/About, the "Modem Firmware" at the bottom is the
baseband. That those are synonyms isn't obvious though.

>Yes, just like me. Except you seem to understand it better.

More practice, since I had to research it again for the 3GS last year.

I would wait until the next version. You'll always be able to get a
3GS from the vast stock that gets released by upgraders, plus
legitimate carrier unlock is now available from at O2 for free for
contract owners (though you pay out your contract of course) or 15
for PAYG.
