Was in the Atacama last year. It rained.

Going back there in July, for a few days. Got 2 weeks in Chile, half
working and half play (plus signing paperwork for the land).

So back to your original question, mobile broadband is pretty good where
I am, in the south west England, fast enough to be used as your only
service without feeling hard done by. However, is it likely to be full
3G and plenty of capacity there?
I mean I would be happy to use it here as my only service, I don't think
the same would hold true in London for instance.

Yes. Chile has a very good mobile communications service.
