Nearly. Sankey Brook Nav opened in 1757.

Coo. Never heard of that one - still, the Bridgewater Canal gets all
the fame, dunnit? So my sneaky selection of the weasel word `heralded'
is still perhaps valid...

Reading about the Sankey Brook Navigation, I'm inclined to agree that
given the purpose for which it was made: shifting coal from Lancs coal
fields out to the Mersey, yep, that'll do as the `first modern
industrial era canal'.

Ah, well, you must understand that I am most definitely NOT a Sankey
partisan, but then again, I am not a Bridgewaterista, either! I just
have a healthy interest in local history. The Sankey Viaduct is worth
a mooch around too, if you like that sort of thing.

Nice idea, he won't though. His idea of fun is persecuting the disabled
on the internet.

<brightly> Me neither, just so long as they re-commission as much old
canal as possible, I'm happy. Well, aside from the Kennet and Avon,
that is. I mean, yeah, okay, so you can drive all the way along it now,
not being stopped at Crofton High Level, but that was always a special
part of the canoe race, having to run that bit.

(me? No, I was only ever support crew. My two bros and our mother have
done it, though)

I had been thinking of doing just that, as it happens, having looked at
the pictures on the Web.
