IME you'd be better off doing just that. I've tried Vodafone, O2
and 3 mobile dongles; getting a working connection on any of them
is laborious, I guess that's because the aerials on these devices
are puny. I've had better connections and speeds from using a
Nokia 6120c and even a Nokia 6630.

I recently purchased a Vodafone PAYG dongle from Argos for 29.99 which
included 15 (1GB) of credit with the advantage that it does not run out
after 30 days.
I disable automatic updates when travelling.

How reliable is that, and what sort of dowload speeds do you get? [I
struggle to get 1 Mbps with my '3' dongle, and in many places where I've
been [1] there's barely enough signal for it to work at all.]

What OS is your computer using?

[1] Particularly on caravan sites in the New Forest - and that's with the
dongle on a USB extension lead, passed out through a window and mounted high
up

I think that it does expire now, just like all the others.

Why do you think that? Argos still say this in their listing:

a.. The only pay as you surf mobile broadband with no 30-day expiry.

I appreciate they could be wrong, but if they are I can see a lot of
returns!

and the one I have from them is now 4 months old and on the original 15 that
it came with?
