From: Trent SC on 19 Jan 2010 06:22 Hi, I need to get hold of a dongle to plug into my Windows 7 laptop to give me fast internet access for the next couple of weeks. the only problem is that I need to get it today for use tomorrow morning. I don't want to faff around trying to plug my phone in and get it to work as a modem. Not particularly high data volumes, so I'm looking for cheap, simple to set up and throwaway. All the major networks have a retail presence in my locality - can anyone recommend a good deal? Cheers.

The Vodafone one has the advantage of being truely PAYG and it doesn't expire after 30 days (unlike all the others). At 15 a Gb it's certainly not the cheapest data around but if you don't need much and intend to use it only occasionally it might make sense for you. You might want to consider a Mifi unit (a mini mobile wireless router modem) which is more flexible in that you can use it with many different wifi enabled devices. More expesive of course and I don't think that there's an option that avoids either a contract or PAYG credit expiring after 30 days. Tim

Thanks for the suggestion, but as this is probably a one-off requirement, the Mifi unit is likely to be overkill for my needs.

If you're near a branch of Maplins, they do the '3' dongle for 20 - and you'll then need to buy a 10 top-up and convert it to a month's internet access. If you're lucky, it will give you internet access - but fast it ain't, unless you're within spitting distance of a mast - and in a lot of places it doesn't work at all. People have also reported some issues with getting these things to work on Windows 7 systems - so be warned! -- Cheers, Roger ______ Email address maintained for newsgroup use only, and not regularly monitored..
