And the chipset? Audio'97 is a standard, not a specific product. I
assume this is a driver issue. The realtek drivers were no good on my
system, they would both the environment sound.

In Diablo2, entering a dungeon and leaving it after some time, would
result in a Deckard Cain, talking with a strong hollow echoing, as if he
were sitting in a spa.

I installed the NForce audio drivers and since then my sound is crystal
clear.

Ah, Information. A property, too valuable these days, to give it away, just so, at no cost.

According to Device Manager my chipset is the VIA686/8231 Audio
Controler. They have worked fine with all my other applications for
the last couple of years.

Don't have a clue what you're talking about here! :)

Wouldn't I have to have an NForce chip onboard to use these drivers
with the VIA chipset??

That's the truth! Maybe it's a codec issue? Have you tried accessing any
internet radio stations by using Windows Media Player and if so, does it
work?
