Obviously I don't know what the temps were when it shut down on my
unexpectedly, but istat indicated both fans were running consistently
around 1000 rpm and the main heat sink was running around 80-85 F and
the CPU A Temp diode around 104 F.

The symptoms you describe are typical of a failing battery.

Does it do this while connected to a power source rather than running on
the battery?
