Maximal Ideals
The expression maximal ideal is ambiguous. Here are two differing notions of maximal ideal. By Zorn's lemma, if x /= 0, there's a maximal ideal I with x not in I. Is I a maximal ideal? Are the two notions the same for rings? If different, how are they distinguished? Are there cases when they are the same? ... 4 Aug 2010 11:25
"What Galileo Avoided [corresp. w. Kepler]"
I know; cracking the books & the lab-door are quite a bit more of interest than the self-imposed ghettos of Usenet. enough of idiocy thus: I just found abok that addresses many of the concerns -- from a brief perusal of about three "random" openings, and of the index -- of the Truthers; it's from 2005, by... 1 Aug 2010 00:52

36 people, meeting in groups of 6. Is it possible to meet each person exactly once in a round of 7 meetings?
An interesting question was posted on Metafilter here: http://ask.metafilter.com/161031/Dont-meet-the-same-person-twice-involves-math-somehow#2311544 I'm wondering if anyone knows the answer or a good approach. Slightly re-stated from that forum, here is the problem: 36 people total, meeting in groups of ... 31 Jul 2010 22:43
