That works, but only up to a certain degree. The advantage of using
Free Agent is that all posts are contained in the Free Agent program
directory. This is a huge advantage over using multiple programs.

Agent/Free Agent with Hamster however is a very good option. Much
better than wasting time trying to make Xnews do things it wasn't
designed for.

Program: Mbox2eml

<q>
"Mbox2eml" allows opening and viewing mailboxes in the standard Unix
Mbox format.

Mbox2eml is a Java application and therefore you should not expect the
performance of a compiled application. If you load a large mailbox it
might takes a minute or so before the content is shown. Sender, subject
and date is shown in the top panel, the message content in the bottom
panel and attachments in the small right bottom panel.

You can then export all or selected messages into the eml format, which
can easily be imported into Outlook Express (via drag and drop). You can
choose any folder to export the messages to. The file names of the
exported messages consist of the sender's name and the subject. The file
date will be set to the message date. If the created filename already
exist, it will be enumerated, so no message is lost.

You have also the possibility to extract all or selected attachments
from one message.

Here you can download the program "Mbox2eml". It does not have a setup
routine. Simply unzip the archive and execute the program file
"Mbox2eml.jar".

Be aware, that you need to install a Java-Runtime-Environment first,
before you can use "Mbox2eml"! You can download an appropriate JRE from
SUN. Version 1.3 or higher is required.

This article has some comments on Mbox2eml and related apps. Worth a
read (IMO).

Interesting. Thanks. I'm set with what I'm using now <OT> Agent 4.0
for news and mail </OT> but for those who are considering a switch
between programs, export from old and import to new is generally the
largest hurdle.

Free Agent has obviously improved a lot over the last couple of years then?
I only tried it once, and it was the first that I discarded in my freeware
newsreader trial.
I know you don't like Xnews, but why don't you at least recommend a decent
newsreader instead of Free Agent?
IMO Xnews and Hamster is the perfect combination.
