This has been an interesting thread, but I'm still perplexed!
Where/when did you all become aware that Free Agent no longer exists?
I have seen nothing on their Web site to that effect. I have six days
left of my trial of version 4-whatever after using Free Agent for
years. Do I get official confirmation of that awful news when my trial
expires?

Are previous versions of FA available on freeware sites?

All online functions in your Agent 4.0 trial will become disabled
after 30 days. You will be able to access the messages and mail
you've already downloaded, but you will not be able to get or send new
messages.

See Agent FAQ:

http://www.forteinc.com/agent/faq.php#B213D649E11C2B26852571C000109992

Agent 3.3, which reverts to Free Agent after the trial period, is
still available on the Forte site. Older versions might still be
there or available elsewhere, but it's not obvious and I didn't really
look for them. The best place to ask about what options are available
is in alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent.

What you describe sounds like any other newsreader where you can
specify the amount of headers to be downloaded. Even keyboard
shortcuts can be customized in other newsreaders to do a variety of
useful tasks.
