Not the actual "ruination of the earth", mind you, but one possible
worst case scenario he read about. Slider is firmly convinced that
we're all doomed and nothing can be done to stop it. He is convinced
of this because he personally can't figure out how to make everybody
act the way he wants them to. So he blames the victim, humanity
itself. It's all the fault of the moral failings of those who are not
doing as badly as he is at living effectively. They're all *evil*.
They are *bad people* and deserve to die. And he'd be happy to kill
them by suicide bomb, if only he had the courage of his convictions
and wasn't incompetent to the point of complete ineffectuality.

Let's see... Slider says that evil people are destroying the world
and thus they deserve to die. Slider says he's helping the evil
people destroy the earth so he deserves to die too. But he also the
earth wouldn't die if people would all stop helping each other to
destroy the earth by changing what they do. But slider, who is still
busily helping the destroyers, is not trying to change. He just wants
other people to change so that he doesn't have to go to all that
trouble himself.

And whoever all those people were who cleaned up the air in Helsinki, they
sure as hell weren't people like Slider. They actually did stuff and
achieved something concrete.

(If they would have been like him, then most probably not only the lichen,
but also the trees themselves would have started dying.)

Maybe slider does not pose with his little achievments like a lot of people
do on earth, like maybe recycling goods and other little things in daily
life.
Btw the example you stated above is just a little step, but still not enough
to save the planet.

Slider says quite clearly that he's part of the problem, you ninny.

"placing it <the blame> where it 'genuinely' + 'actually' belongs...
with human kind... which perforce includes me."

Recycling. Heh.

Neither he nor you have shown the slightest interest in taking any
positive steps to prevent an ecological catastrophe. It's too much
trouble and neither of you believes you have enough power over the
events of your lives to make any difference anyway. Besides, you both
are actively rooting *for* human destruction, since you both think we
all deserve to die. You, who award yourself the title "guardian", are
in fact guarding nothing but your space on the couch in front of your
TV.
