Stop it - you're making me all misty eyed.

There were a couple of games on the PC (well, three actually) called 'X
- Beyond The Frontier', 'X2:The Khaak Threat" and "X3:I Can't Rememebr
The Tagline" that were very Elite-ish in game play - open ended,
trading, fighting, exploring type stuff. The graphics on the the third
one were very impressive.

Yep, could be. But even if it's just 10%, it's 10% of a significantly
bigger pie than, say, 10 years ago.

I have played many 'elite-like' games since, but somehow they never had
the playability of elite, but then elite 2 didn't.
I often think though that it was just a 'time and place' thing. It was
great at the time but the world has moved on.

I played it to death at the time, but I doubt I could spend any time
with it now. Compared to what was around at the time it had really deep
gameplay but now, compared to things like Fallout 3 etc, there is not
much to it.

Pretty good! I've got the PC Orange Box - will that work from the disk -
I'd like to avoid the 5GB download . . .

I played X:BTF and X2 a hell of a lot as they captured enough of the Elite
feel for me to be happy. X3 was much harder to get into, so I didn't.

The main problem with them (and it's a problem Elite itself had purely due
to the nature of the game) is that they start hard and then become easier as
you get more cash/equipment. The first few hours of X:BTF were _tedious_ as
you just shuttled back and forth between two space stations, trying to build
up some cash.
