One question is: Has the world moved on, or is it just the hardware? Could say the same about Eve for Macs. I still have copies of Eve and Myst. I think I still have a PC that will run Myst somewhere, and I know that my G4 will run Eve when hooked to the right monitor. Geoff

I don't know if it is a particularly good comparison. Elite was a very good game, whith quite strong depth, and not very good graphics, whereas Myst was a graphically stunning (at the time) adventure game, but really lacked actual depth with quite abstract puzzles. It may have been interesting as a psych tool, but most people I knew who played it got bored and did something else once the interest of the graphics paled. Elite was also less linear than Myst - Myst had no replay value (which is common with quite a few games) > One question is: > Has the world moved on, or is it just the hardware? From mysts point of view, I would say it was just a hardware game, from elites point of view, I think the world has moved on, in that there is more depth to a lot of games than there was to elite. > Could say the same about Eve for Macs. > I still have copies of Eve and Myst. I know nothing about eve, other than a lot of people talked about it a lot some time ago, but that is the first reference I have heard about it in ages. -- Woody

"Mac owners must have more disposable income - look at all the extra money they spend to get the same hardware." I'm surprised it didn't come sooner. I'll be mucking about getting my Portal saved game from my virtual machine over to Steam/OSX over the weekend. Will be reading people's experiences here with interest. -z- -- email: nettid1 at fastmail dot fm

Well of course they do. They have more intelligence, discernment and taste; naturally, they have more money. -- Peter

Curiously, there's a script in the app bundle with this in it: > > elif [ "$UNAME" == "Linux" ]; then > PLATFORM=linux32 > # prepend our lib path to LD_LIBRARY_PATH > export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="${STEAMROOT}"/${PLATFORM}:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH > fi > > That could be just for game servers though. Nope. They will be releasing a Linux port too :) http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=valve_steam_announcement&num=1 |
