Eldoret <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eldoret_International_Airport> wow - look at that, 'Currently the airport has three scheduled international cargo flights and several ad hoc freighters per week.' It is actually a very nice airport, not even just by kenyan standards. Although one day we went there and the outside (there are a lot of glass panels) were plastered with praying mantis, to the point where you couldn't move without treading on them. And obviously also a lot of birds. I was impressed, I hadn't seen a praying mantis up until that point. Was very sad to see Eldorets recent troubles though. Seemed such a nice friendly place when I was there (in 96), but I guess you never can tell. -- Woody www.alienrat.com

It's 35 years since I was anywhere near there (Masai Mara). Well, it is 13 years since I was there. But I am glad I went -- Woody www.alienrat.com

Talking or Radar, cables and trouble. ;-) Our Co was asked to install some additional thin Ethernet cabling (mainly just to extend to the kit we were installing at the time) at one of London's airports and when we turned up their guy checked the cable and said "that's no good". Long story short, that building was very near the Radar (nearer than most of the other airport buildings I mean <g>) and unless the Ethernet cable was (also) foil shielded it would suffer from interference from the Radar. Luckily there was a decent cable supplier round the corner so we were able to complete the job that day. ;-) My first day as a Field support guy was over a Luton Airport repairing numerous serial <> line drivers (remote stand-alone's and the matching rack mount units at the comms centre) that had been taken out by a nearby lightening strike. It was nearly all the current loop drivers and opto-isolators that had been taken out (exhausted my spares stock)! Luckily our units had taken the brunt of it and none of their equipment was damaged. I couldn't do much with the StatMux that was taken out at Kingston Poly by the same storm on the same day. It set theirs on fire! ;-( Cheers, T i m |
