Many of my colleagues find it hilarious that I've bought an iPad -- I'm a Flash developer -- but I actually find it rather nice having something that I can't even begin to do my day job on. b. -- <bas(a)bas.me.uk> <URL:http://bas.me.uk/> `Zombies are defined by behavior and can be "explained" by many handy shortcuts: the supernatural, radiation, a virus, space visitors, secret weapons, a Harvard education and so on.' -- Roger Ebert

So, it seems that many of the early adopters here are developers in some way or another? I had an email from Currys offering me one today, along with Apple themselves. Whilst I'm sure they are lovely well - made / clever things and considering it as a 'consumer product' rather than a tool as such, is it really worth that sort of money? I mean, against say a TFT TV or some of the other high tech gear that is out there these days? And I'm talking for it's hardware / function value rather than any value put on because of the brand or desirability etc. I was only considering that as I'm 'outside the loop' as such in that I neither want nor could justify the cost even if I did. Yes I'd accept one as a gift but I think if I got to borrow one to play with I would probably then decide it that would still be a way down the wish list even if I won the lottery (in the same way riding my mates Harley for a few hours did for me with that. Fun for a while but the novelty wore off very fast and I don't 'buy in' to that sort of lifestyle thang. I could see the appeal though and am not 'anti' them as some are). Are you considering converting your game to the iPad Woody? Cheers, T i m

Well, they are certainly not cheap so they are not for all, but they are great things. OK, I am not sure they are life changing, but they are certainly useful things, and also more sociable than a computer as such. I think this is the start of the process that ends up with those things on startreck, little tablets that have some function that get used and handed from person to person. Obviously it is a long process. I think one of the major game changing things that hasn't been highlighted enough is the battery life. I have a tablet here behind it, a TC1100. It is slower, it has more memory and about the same storage. It has a battery life of about an hour now, but it was 2.5 when it was new. As a result, I can't use it anywhere away from the power - I cant do a days worth of any form of work with it, until it has to go and charge for a bit -the iPad I could. I have plugged it in a few times to sync stuff, the lowest battery life I have seen is 89% > Yes I'd accept one as a gift but I think if I got to borrow one to > play with I would probably then decide it that would still be a way > down the wish list even if I won the lottery (in the same way riding > my mates Harley for a few hours did for me with that. I am going to write a lot and see what comes out basically. The more I use it, the more I see some things I want to do. -- Woody |
