I call that a smart move anyway. That way you can enjoy the device without
being even tempted to work. "Keep work out of the home!"

Out of interest, any idea what it is about her laptop that is causing
her such stress? I mean is it 'Windows' that is the problem in which
case she could try Ubuntu quite easily? If it's computers in general
then as you say an iPad may be better.

Jim's comment got me thinking about my Mum and her computing needs and
whilst she really only uses her PC Laptop to chat to us on MSN now and
again, I'm pretty sure 500 would be out of the question and I'm not
sure how well she would be able to hold one with her arthritic hands.

Difficult to answer. You certainly need a computer initially purely to
unlock it, but presumably if you got it in an Apple Store they could do
that for you. The danger would be that if you then subsequently docked
it to a computer it might overwrite the device.

But basically, if you can put up with not being able to back it up then
a computer isn't -essential-.

Having had a chance to play with it a bit more (once I'd wrestled it
from SWMBO's grasp) here are my thoughts:

Weight: definitely heavier than they look. Not by much, by enough so
that holding one up becomes tiring quite quickly. In my brief forays
into eBooks I find that I must rest it against something in order to be
comfortable.

Screen: gorgeous. Also a total fingerprint magnet, but you tend not to
see this when in use. It's only when you put it down and look at it that
you realise. *huge* viewing angle.

Safari and web browsing: fantastic. Utterly fantastic, lack of Flash
notwithstanding.

The Mail app is a more polished version of the iPhone's, not too
surprisingly. Good without being great. OS4 is, I think, meant to bring
some improvements such as a single unified inbox.

iCal: see Mail.
Contacts:ditto.

Keyboard: very usable, especially in landscape. You're not going to
touch type but you can still get a decent turn of speed out of it.

I need to get a stand for it. Nothing fancy, just a simple dock-and-prop
affair. Recommendations sought.
