We have a good friend in Geneva, who was at school with Anne [1] and has
been close ever since, who has an iMac and a broadband connection. This
friend also has a friendly and fairly devoted Mac techie who handles her
updates and seems to know what he is doing.

Yes; if it can't print, there's a massive question mark over the whole
thing. But I can't believe that printing won't be enabled Real Soon Now,
in some form or other.

[1] I've just realised that this means that they've been great friends
for more than 55 years- and I've know this person even longer. She
introduced Anne and me- I owe her a great debt. Some people are so much
part of your life that you can't imagine it without them. She's also
best friends with my sister (who was also at school with her) but the
real point now is that she has this iG5, which is kept in good order by
the techie in question. She's the kind of person who receives help
without having to ask... And she's a totally wonderful cook. We're
having dinner there in ten days or so- several tiems...

In the past OS X used to install around 4GB of printer drivers.
I don't know if it does now.

4GB is a lot for a device such as the iPad with a maximum of
16GB total storage space.

So, if printing is to be enabled on the iPad, I think the method
will be different. Perhaps Apple are now devising this method.

Based on what I've heard about the 4.0 preview yesterday, printing still
isn't going to happen any time soon.

I'd hope that they will find a way of installing one driver for one
printer- after all, most printers (all the ones I've seen lately come
with a CD including a driver), or maybe even a simple driver, low on
features and fonts but good for simple letters. That used to be
possible. If it means getting the keyboard dock to have a USB port, well
that would be fine. I'd want a proper keyboard anyway.

Only a very small part of this is actually drivers. And there would be
no need to install *all* drivers at once, just let the user select a
supported printer from a list and install it over the net then.

There seems to be nothing in 4.0 about printing. But 4.0 coming to the
iPad only in fall leaves a bit of room here.
