As others have said, WiFi is probably your best option, though if you're abroad for a period of time you may want to put in a local simcard. If you've had your phone unlocked properly, you must try putting in a non-O2 simcard in it before you leave to confirm that it does work. Previous to my holiday I got O2 to unlock the iPhone so I could put in a local simcard. Although O2 sent me a message to say that the phone had been unlocked, what they didn't explain was that one has to put a non-O2 sim in and then connect it to iTunes for the unlocking to actually work. Also when I was on holiday although I never switched on data roaming, O2 repeatedly sent me messages like 'Please be aware that it's expensive using data on your phone abroad....' 'Don't forget that it can be expensive to use data on your phone abroad...' These messages made me a bit paranoid that for some reason I would unknowingly be racking up data bills that in the end I transferred my O2 simcard to another phone.

Heh, it's not a bad plan..... however, I found that by buying a local SIM and activating a data plan on it I got an awful lot more out of my holiday than I would otherwise have done. -- SteveH

Thanks - just got mine on contract so not unlocked. Is there any way data could be coming in and out even though data roaming is off? I read somewhere about an AT&T problem in the US. -- bellajonez at yahoo dot co dot uk

Reemember when we didn't have phones and just went away, willy nilly, at will, with no way of being contacted or telling friends about the coffee bar we were in or the weather? *sigh* -- bellajonez at yahoo dot co dot uk |
