From: Bella Jones on 21 Mar 2010 13:51 Hi all I'm off to France next week for a little holiday. I am warned loudly to 'turn data roaming off' on my iPhone, and, having looked, it already is off. So what is it for? I just googled, and someone said that data roaming is what kicks in when you're out of your home provider area. So what do I do when I want to check email when I'm away? Turn data roaming on for a minute or two and then remember to turn it off? And obviously look for free wifi places I guess. Slightly confused. -- bellajonez at yahoo dot co dot uk

The cost of data when out of your home provider area (ie, the UK) is $SHITLOADS per $SMALL_AMOUNT_OF_DATA, so unless you really have a lot of money and a desparate need to read your spam, keep it off. > So what do I do when I want to check email when I'm away? Hang around outside a Macdonalds, some shopping centers and outside (or inside if they are yours) hotels where they have free wifi. France isn't great for free wifi, but it exists in some places. If you really can't live without your email, turn it on and check, but be prepared for a big bill when you get back > And obviously look for free wifi places I guess. That is the sensible option. -- Woody

Are there additional settings needed to stop Mail? Obviously push notifications need disabling, but anything else? -- Chris

Push notifications won't come over the cellular network but will instead queue until your in a WiFi spot. Have a nive trip! Gwynne -- My real email is net, not line. |
