Are these Apple keyboards? Because it _should_ be extreme bottom-left on the min-keyboard, and the key to the right of the backspace key on the full-sized one (where on a PC keyboard it would be the Insert key). If he has bought an iMac (the OP) there should be a fn key on it, my iMac is about a year old and has one. Never knew that fn delete did forward delete though! Mind you, I rarely use forward delete on anything. -- Woody

Not on any of the last three generations of Mac keyboard - which I happen to have within convenient sight. Not the current flat ones (small or large - i've one of each), not the last full-travel design, and not the design before that. I've one of the type prior to the third gen back - that `fourth gen back from now' jobbie is in the loft, and memory tells me it's just the same as third gen back but coloured rather than white. > Its > function is to delete the character to the left of the insertion point. Nope, delete is just a left arrow. The `X inside' symbol is X inside a rightward pointing `hollow arrow' thingy and means *FORWARD* delete. Except that that's what it looks like on the keyboard prior to the current line and you won't find one on the non-numberpad flat Mac keyboard. The /current/ Mac keyboards have the word `delete' written on the forward delete key, with a very small white on black non-hollow version of the `X inside the hollow pointer' symbol. But only the big ones, not the small ones. Umm. Dug in the cupboard - I've got a pre-ADB Mac keyboard. Model M0110A. It's got one key marked backspace (back delete) and one marked `clear' which I think still exists as the `box with a cross through it' key on keyboards that have a number pad. No forward delete, no special key symbols except for one Apple key (and four arrow keys, so this one ain't a thin Mac's keyboard). > If you want to delete the character to the right of the insertion point, > the key combination fn-delete will achieve that in most applications. > Some applications also recognise Ctrl-D as a forward delete. There's no fn key on either the small or large current Mac keyboards. I've just looked at one example of each. > You can also choose to use a different keyboard, which has the full > range of keys including a separate "del" or "forward delete" key. How does one get that sort of thing to work with a non-Apple keyboard? I have the large aluminum one with the numeric keyboard, that I guess was the last version (came by default with the iMac). that has a fn key. The large keyboard on apples site has it in the same place: <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB110LL/A> >> You can also choose to use a different keyboard, which has the full >> range of keys including a separate "del" or "forward delete" key.
