A year (backwards) doesn't make a difference. Altera crappy I/Os weren't
fixable. Xilinx software was easily fixed by using Synplify.

Linux may be an alternative at that point. Lets face it: if you want
to run XP software you'll need something like a virtual machine to run
it on Win7. So why not run XP in a virtual machine on Linux?
Engineering software is always behind and upgrading is costly so WinXP
compatibility is required for several years.

I've used an NE555 as a crude PWM controller on several occasions.
Going from -48V to +140V was the most extreme.
