I got a pack of four Tronic 2500 mAh AA NiMh cells from Lidl for 2.50
GBP. I only need two in the Magic Mouse but let's say I keep the other
pair charged and ready to swap. I use the mouse for about 8 hours per
day and the batteries last about a month on one charge. With that
frequency of charging they might last three years, which is as long as I
ever keep a computer.

I don't know about you but I can raise $3.84 without taking out a second
mortgage.

Plenty.

But you do not have expensive sheep to keep like Nick.

Not everyone's experience is the same as yours or Michelle's. In fact, it
appears that about half the folks who've offered to share their experience
indicate that they need to replace their Magic Mouse batteries about every 4
weeks; the other half find that they need to replace them twice as often
(see, for example user opinions at Apple's own website: http://is.gd/dxjIy).
One fellow went so far as to build his own rechargeable lithium battery pack
for the Magic Mouse, but even he only manages to get 2+ months' use between
charges (see http://is.gd/dxjY1). Considering that the device was initially
touted as having a battery life of up to 4 months, the Magic Mouse's energy
performance isn't exactly stellar. And when compared to older optical
rodents -- such as my ancient Logitech Cordless Optical MouseMan, whose
batteries last up to a year -- the Magic Mouse's energy performance is
downright dismal.

FWIW, here are some data I collected regarding my own Magic Mouse
experience:

http://is.gd/dxjiY

http://is.gd/dxjn3

http://is.gd/dxjp1

http://is.gd/dxjsB

Only once did I experience better performance, and that was with "high
performance" lithium batteries, costing nearly 4 times the price of the
brand-name alkalines that Apple ships with the device:

http://is.gd/dxjxB

The slight improvement in performance (18 days before they were completely
drained) certainly isn't worth the the significantly higher price compared
to the standard (or even the higher-performing) alkalines.

The folks at AppleCare are still scratching there asses about this.

While the mouse in the ceiling outlived my Mighty Mice, I got good news
this morning. It ventured onto the floor overnight, and I had left a 5"
computer fan running on the basement floor. (this is a 110vac type, and
is fairly strong).

The mouse ventured a bit too close to the fan. Suspect its neck was
broken. (it was still in one piece).

So, I not only got rid of the mighty mouse problem by buying a magic
one, but also got rid of the furry mouse problem with a fan ! (I never
expected that to act as a mouse trap !)
