As an old time mouse cleaner, the ball was just the first vector to the real problem. There were two plastic rollers that the ball delivered lint to. You had to clean the lint out of the roller and off the axle. I used a needle to scrape the fuzz out. Then it'd work for a couple of months usually. I've got one of those Apple supplied optical jobbies now, and the problem doesn't exist. As the Frankenstein monster would say, "Ball on pad...*baaad*! leo

As the Frankenstein monster would > say, "Ball on pad...*baaad*! > You are perfectly correct Leo, how could I have been so hasty? The ball was more the thing you always grabbed first to clear the way to things... the ball itself was the least problem of all! Yes, it was almost always build-up on the rollers, I used a pair of tweezers, mainly closed, as a scraper. And I would blow vigorously after each bit of work. If the vac was handy I *loved* socking it to... I mean sucking it... The tweezers were used as tweezers for the wrapped stuff around the rollers. I loved that damned blocky mouse so much that I used it instead of the sexier lower profiled lighter more rounded model that came out after the SE, it *felt too cheap*! I still have a couple of those squarish block mice. These are the ones I programmed in QuickBasic with, the ones I wrote ten thousand letters and faxes with, the ones I would draw with SuperDuper ... memories... memories... <g> -- dorayme
