I downloaded "Patent Absurdity" (High Quality) from here: http://patentabsurdity.com/download.html It is an ogv file and wasn't recognised so I installed the Perian QuickTime component in my account: http://perian.org/ Now it is recognised and when I select the .ogv icon and hit the space bar to invoke Quic... 25 Apr 2010 20:04
Grab
Ever since I can remember, I've been using command-shift-3 or -4 to make screen snapshots. It doesn't seem to be described any longer in Tiger Help. It says to use Grab. It's more cumbersome to open the application than to hit three keys. Is it superior? ... 23 Apr 2010 21:02
Ripping a DVD?
Michelle Steiner wrote: I'd like to copy the contents of the DVD to my hard disk; what free or low-cost software is available for me to do that? Assuming you have a DVD drive that allows you to read the video files as data, VLC is probably the best for this. There is also MacTheRipper, but AFIAK it was... 23 Apr 2010 17:39

No Cold Boot w/ USB Hard Drive Attached
Running SL 10.6.3 on a 21.5" iMac. When my Time Machine USB drive (Samsung S2 640 GB) is attached either directly to the computer or to a powered hub, the computer hangs at the white screen (no Apple logo) and won't cold boot until I unplug the drive at which point it boots normally. I've tried different US... 23 Apr 2010 21:02
Install Snow Leopard via Airport Network
(Regarding an iMac Intel 17" late 2008 I think) My home network has several Macs and iPods connected via a Time Capsule and a couple of AirPorts. I want to install Snow Leopard on the 17" iMac, but its optical drive has failed. I know the MacBook Air OS can be installed this way, but how about the iMac? When I re... 18 Apr 2010 23:02
OS X Terminal and ports
I'm installing the UPS (battery back-up) monitoring program apcupsd. After basic configuration, I can't get apcupsd to run. It stops immediately, reporting: Cannot open UPS port tty.PL2303-000053FD: No such file or directory yet when I list all devices it shows up exactly as "tty.PL2303-000053FD". I... 18 Apr 2010 18:37
access Linux ext3 fs os leopard?
I have some old Linux HDs lying around, which I would like to read from my Leopard macbook. I guess natively there is no chance, but could a Linux VM in Fusion read those filesystems if I placed the disks into an external (USB) drive and connected that through to the Linux guest? ... 18 Apr 2010 13:03
Resizing images
pardon me for asking a Mac related question... A cousin has a vanilla Mac. She has photos in Iphoto. Those images are too big to be emailed. On a vanilla Mac, is there a way to downscale an image to a smaller size and save it on disk so that a browser can then upload the smaller file ? I know that when using... 20 Apr 2010 16:01
