This is why by and large I don't like working with them. "It was
difficult to write, it should be difficult to understand".

He may have got worse then. I killfiled him several years ago in
uk.comp.homebuilt - temporarily at first, now permanently - and back
then he was usually right, sometimes extremely wrong (usually due to
not understanding the anecdote/data division), but generally offensive
with either. Life's too short to care.

I enjoy (to an extent) dicking about with computers so I will (to a
point) fix my own problems rather than paying someone else.

I don't enjoy dicking about with cars, or drains, or poorly pets, or
boilers. Fortunately, with the invention of money, I have the
opportunity to pay somebody else to sort those problems. It makes me
very happy that I can do this rather than faffing around myself trying
to learn about drains or cat anatomy to save a few quid. Frankly I'd
much rather pay a chunk of change for someone else to do it for me, as
it means I can spend my time doing something I enjoy.

I could service my own car, but I pay someone else to do it. I even pay
for them to change the oil, which is probably one of the easiest "real"
jobs on a car. They charge for the time and charge a lot for the oil. I
don't care as I don't have to buy the oil, crawl under the car to change
it, and store then dispose of the used oil.

There's no reason people shouldn't have the same attitude towards paying
to get computer problems fixed. Dismissing it as "wasted money" assumes
other people have the same priorities as you. They don't.

I'd best tell Grandma.

Let me guess; you work in IT, or program as a hobby?
