Hi Mike,

I don't understand why you are doing all those reinstalls, if you want to
use a full restore.

My tape backup didn't backup every program. I backed up System State, Docs
and Settings, System Volume, AD, etc. My thought was that if I had at least
parts of the programs installed, then the full restore will "finish the
job".

I'll try to post the contents of my 'full backup' tonight.

I never will understand why people will use 3rd party backup software and
than are not capable of restoring everything. SBS Backup just does that. It
will backup everything, it will restore everything. It makes no sense to me
to partially backup stuff.

Hey Marina,

Just as an FYI, Backup Exec is *capable* of backing up everything. The most
common reason people don't is that they are trying to fit on media too small
to accommodate a full backup. The unfortunate downside to such a plan is
the complete pain that restoring a system in this state can be.

And to Mike,

Did you at least use SQL agents with to back up the SQL databases with
Backup Exec? Instead of doing "partial" installs and hoping that DLL's
match ( a great way to make your system unstable again!) I'd rather see you
do this:

1) Do a base OS install and get it back to the proper service pack.
2) Restore system state. This will get you back on with AD. This will also
restore some DLL's for 3rd-party programs, but that is okay.
3) Apply any security patches you need.
4) Install all your 3rd-party programs. This will *replace* those dll's
restored in step 2 and remove any chance of DLL hell.
5) Patch your programs up to the latest version.
6) Now you can restore the remaining files, SQL databases, Exchange data,
with the Backup Exec agents. This will restore sharepoint, WSUS, and other
SQL-based programs back to their pre-failed state. The restore process will
simply replace the generic "empty" databases that the fresh installs create.

It isn't pretty, but it'll work if done right.

Thanks Cliff. I did use those agents. Let me get the list of items
in my 'full' backup tonight and I'll post it here. (on a lunch break
now and can't do anything until later.)
