From: Mike in Nebraska on 2 Jan 2010 17:21 Been many months since I last posted. I'm the 'poster boy' for how NOT to do things with SBS (just do a search on my posts for the last 3-5 years - you'll see). Got myself in a pickle this time and could use some guidance from the seasoned vets on this forum. As of 31 Dec '09, I no longer work for the nonprofit I've been with since 2003; short story - the economy. They kept me on as a contractor to handle IT. I brought my trusty Dell Dimension 8300 home as it had all my tools on it. I had asked about RWW vs. VPN a few weekls ago and the replies convinced me to go with RWW. Theh recommended placing a PC locked in the server room that I could remopte into and then do my work. Couldn't make that happen, and quickly found out that I needed to do things (update the website using Adobe GoLive, update the intranet with SharePoint Designer, etc.) so I thought I'd try a VPN that I'd turn on just when I needed it. Hoo-boy. I got into Server Management > Internet and clicked on the icon to create a remote connection (don't remember the exact verbiage). I then created a Remote Connection Disk, got into ISA 2004 and set it for VPN, then ran CEICW. Right there I ran into problems. The firewall wouldn't configure. No errors in the App or System logs. Nothing I could see in the ISAInfo log. SBS and ISA BPA's were clean. Tried to back out of it in ISA and CEICW - no good. The Montitoring MSDE quit on me next, then I started seeing errors about SQL. (I rebooted a bunch.) Tried to fix SQL 2000 - no good. Tried to fix SQL Server 2005 Express - no good. Then I thought I'd just grab my backup tape (80GB capacity) from the last full backup (done every week). Fired up Symantec Backup Exec (latest version), but ... it uses SQL Server 2005 Express. Without it, my backup does me no good. It was now 4 am (this morning - can't believe I had to pull another all-nighter), so I tried to uninstall/reinstall both versions of SQL - kept failing. Used the advanced uninstall method using Revo Uninstaller (normally my ace in the hole) - kept failing on reinstallation. I quit at 10:30 am this morning and got a short nap before I had to head to my P/T job. I'm now stuck with no ISA (uninstalled hoping I could reinstall fresh and restore the configuration piece by piece) - no good. Even ISA 2000 won't install. I'm gonna have about 5-7 hours tomorrow to fix this (or my wife will revolt!). Other than the obvious (I should have backed up ISA before(!) I did any changes - I've kicked myself plenty alreaxdy), what can I do to get it back? (I can access the internet from our public wireless so I can search for help while in the server room.) Many thanks in advance! (I learned to love SBS - still do - but it can sure be touchy! [At least for this retired Marine.] Mike in Nebraska
From: Larry Struckmeyer[SBS-MVP] on 2 Jan 2010 17:52 Hi Mike: Can you please give us a clue as to the messages you get when installing any of the products? Have you tried a maintenance reinstall from the SBS media from Control Panel - Add/Remove? Still no errors in the event logs or trash in the installation logs? Some of those logs get pretty long, so you might want to rename the ones that modified when you were running your installs and try again to get a fresh copy. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\Logs and other location, using search on *.log remember, it is late on a holiday Saturday, so you might not get a lot of responses tonight. - Larry Please post the resolution to your issue so others may benefit - Get Your SBS Health Check at www.sbsbpa.com > Been many months since I last posted. From: Mike in Nebraska on 2 Jan 2010 18:04 Most of the answers will have to wait for tomorrow when I get back in there. I DID try a maintenance reinstall from Add/Remove Programs, and all reinstalled fine except Monitoring. Saw an old thread when I searched on how to fix it, but the SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 problems prevent me going further. Been thinking about trying a registry cleaner ...... And you're right about the holiday weekend. Responses will be slow. (Geez - how many times was I [STRONGLY] advised to NEVER try to change things on a Friday or heading into a holiday? Trusted too much in the SBS wizards; "what could go wrong?")
