No. The right of self defence has to be limited in a civilised society. If somebody slaps me I have no right to burn their house down with them and their family inside. The law recognises 'proportionate response'. Dirk
From: Reg Edwards on 7 Aug 2006 14:42 By 1942, 99% of the output of British factories and workshops was devoted to the war effort. A large proportion of workers and factory machine operators were housewives, women and girls. Much of it was aircraft, fighter, bomber, motor vehicle production, and especially shipbuilding. The Germans were not yet reduced to employing women in factories. Let alone on overtime. Goering's guns-instead-of-butter for housewives did not come until after the German defeat in the great Battle of Machines, around the City of Kursk on the Russian Steppes in June 1943. After Kursk, even Hitler must have realised the war was lost. But it was another two years before Russian shells and rockets began falling on Berlin. Very roughly, when the war started in 1939, the British merchant marine weighed 20 million tons. It had taken 100 years to build up, by far, the world's largest merchant navy. Brittania indeed ruled the waves. German U-boats in the North Atlantic, between 1939 and 1945, sank 20 million tons of merchant shipping. Sometimes at a rate of a 10,000 ton merchant ship every day. The cost in life amongst merchant seamen was enormous. Over 100,000 died. England was almost brought to its knees. All the essentials, food, clothing, coal, petrol, were severely rationed. But at the end of the war the British Mercantile Marine was still 20 million tons. Miracles had been acheived by the rivetters in the shipbuilding industry - in the shipyards at Birkenhead, Belfast, in Glasgow on the Clyde, on Tyneside and other smaller shipyards. But because we were on the winning side in the war, we sat on our arses and allowed other nations, also severely affected by war, to attract the business of conveying goods by sea. Now we see the results of our laziness. =====================================
