Win search is, and always was, and probably always will be, completely
useless. Fine if you want to find a photo of your granny or a cookie
recipe you saved somewhere, but totally useless if you want to find
anything at all to do with the OS itself. It's dumbed-down, in the
same way as system files and file extensions are hidden by default.

No, just follow as I mentioned - open notepad and then type EXACTLY
what I wrote (C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts) into the File
Open dialog in Notepad whilst running as admin. Don't browse to the
folder, just type that.

Fingers crossed that this solves your issue. Post back your results
please :-)

1. No this is not a common problem:

2. I personally don't like to edit the HOST File because most of the time it
bites you or the next person in the #$@#$
because it's not a common tweak,

I'd rather make sure that DNS is working on the SBS2003 server first
that the SBS2003 is the DHCP server and the DNS server

Please post the IPconfig/all from the SBS server and affected PC

As a start. (To me editing the HOST files is a Band-Aid that you don't want
to apply)
My 2 cents :)
Thanks
Russ

From: Jim on
Agreed.

Even though I gave notes on editing hosts, it's a sticking-plaster
rather than a proper fix.

I agree Russ. After reading through this thread, my first thought is
there must be an ISP's DNS address in the workstation, or the
pripheral firewall's IP address being used as a DNS address. This may
possibly be an issue on the SBS server as well.

The ipconfigs will surely help us to diagnose it, and it could be a
simple fix of simply removing anything else other than the SBS' IP as
a DNS address on all machines and in the DHCP Scope Option 006.

OK. This just gets more bizarre.

I have checked the directory where the hosts file should be. It isn't
there. The folder contains four files:

hostsold
network
services
protocol
lmhosts.sam

All four files are dated 10/06/2009. This machine is a Win 7 client,
Fujitsu - Siemens hardware, installed onto the network straight out of the
box about 8 weeks ago. So none of these files has been updated since the box
was installed.

So I haven't edited the hosts file because I can't find it.

Here are the ipconfig /all reports from this client and the server. Client
