From: Larry Struckmeyer[SBS-MVP] on
Howard:

Your ipconfig looks good.

Are both the SBS and the Win7 systems fully patched up? I might try standard
Windows and Microsoft Update on both, in addition to WSUS.

I also would look for new NIC drivers and be sure all the stuff in the BPA
is fixed.

You don't seem to be one to try to drive SBS the same way one might pilot
Windows Standard, so I am guessing all management is done with the SBS Wizards.

Any change the SBS and the Win7 are trying to do real time AV scanning when
opening a file?

"hostsold" does not exist on my Win7 Ultimate 32, but the others do. Sounds
like something / one has been messing with it. But you can copy it to "hosts"
no extenstion and modify it at will. If it has a lot of strange entries,
it can be either good or bad.

The good things that do that will normally identify themselves.

Thanks Larry.

Here is 'hostsold':

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

I don't know where the comment 'localhost name resolution is handled within
DNS itself' came from. Any ideas?

Some additional news.. I've added the 'hosts' file in the right directory
and tested the system again. On my own 'Administrator' ID from the Win 7
client I can open files from the server in 2 - 3 seconds. On the users ID it
is still taking 7 - 15 seconds. So maybe it is nothing to do with Office but
something to do with the UserID / login??

On a minor point - the customer would like to do without the default warning
about opening Word / Excel files which could damage her machine, Given that
these files are in the Companyweb libraries, the warning is misplaced. Where
can we switch it off?

Thanks for your help.
