Thanks Chi, for the observation about doc/xls vs. docx/xlsx, etc.,
files. In my client's case, the Office 2003 formats remain the
exclsuive format in use, due to the prevalance of Office 2003 in the
organisation. That said, I will look to perform some tests to see if I
can confirm your observations.
From: Howard08 on
Many thanks for this Larry. Looks like it will be a couple of weeks before I
can schedule access to the machine to make the changes, but I will post here
whether it works or not.

Best wishes

Just to let you know, I have had the chance to check things out with
Office 2007 format files, and the problem is the same. Will re-create
the user's local copy of their (roaming) profile next to see if that
helps.
From: Howard08 on
Hi Larry,

OK. Deleted the user profile as per your note. When we tried to log the
user in again to recreate the profile we created only a temporary profile.
Strangely, all the users files were available and the good news is that the
Office 2007 performance problem had gone. However, as a Temp profile any
settings changed are deleted when the user logs off so we need to re-create
the permanent profile.

The event log showed multiple error EventID 502 "Failed to apply policy and
redirect folder "RoamingAppData" to "\\SBS\UserData\"USERNAME"\Application
Data". This path does contain an error - "UserData" should be "User Data" -
(and I think "SBS" shoud be "SERVERNAME"?) but I don't know where this error
is coming from.

Ideas welcome ASAP as the user needs her permanent profile!

Thanks

Just to close this thread - we eventually had to call in Microsoft Tech
Support. The solution took half a day and involved editing the registry. I
won't even try to detail the edits here. That done we were able to recreate
the user profile and the performance issue had gone.
