The fact is giffgaff along with 3, Orange and O2 have done nothing
to prevent reverse charge scammers from attaching charges to
customers bills

Giffgaff like to act like they are some new fair deal network,
if they want to earn that reputation instead of just acting it
they have to at least copy T Mobile and Vodas opt out.

What would be revolutionary would be for them to go further
and offer opt in.

Oh well, I've made a complaint to PhonePayPlus. I've never done that
before, so it'll be interesting to see how effective they are and what
they do.

I don't have high hopes. I received this error during the process...

It's all a bit annoying and I'm left feeling as though it's my fault
and, to be honest, a little powerless about the whole thing.

Here's another response from the con-con giffgaff forum, see

You just don't get it do you?

Do you expect GG to give everyone a call to make sure they really have
subscribed to a premium rate text services? Get real!

You HAVE been conned. Certainly.

BUT, it's not GG doing the conning here. As I said, you need to take
responsibility and take this up with the originator of the text. GG
have given you guidance on how to do that - but it seems you still
want your bottom wiping.

It might not be your fault, but it IS your responsibility.

It appears I'm responsible for being conned. It's always the victim's
fault... :(

Lots of quoting of quoting, which gets confusing. I simply asked for
clarification. That doesn't make me a liar. I'm still not sure
whether you meant the middle sentence of your original five or the
three I quoted. But you seem confused about it yourself now.

>I really can't figure out why you find it such a thrill to spend hours

>whining that there was nobody willing to help

Because, as I keep highlighting, the contract is between myself and
con-con giffgaff. The fact they've allowed a third party to put their
sticky paws into my account shouldn't be my problem.

Presumably you have little or no understanding of contract law?

>it was suggested to you that contacting the number provider would help
>glea info on the identity of the service subscribed to, but you
>wouldn't have that either

I have no contract or relationship with them, whereas con-con giffgaff
presumably does because they handed over some of my account balance to
them.

I have, since, contacted them and should receive a response within the
next 24 hours. Hopefully a cheque for GBP5.10 will be in the post and
on its way to me by then.

>you are still persisiting with complaining that giffgaff has done

Yes, con-con giffgaff have lied to me, said it's not their fault and
suggested I go begging for a refund to a third party. Obviously
customer service isn't a high priority for them, which is presumably
why they rely on people in their caring, sharing, online community to
show the world their ignorance of customer service and everything
else.

Done that... waiting for reply and cheque to arrive in post.

Of course. It's all my fault. After all, I'm only the customer who's
been conned out of GBP5.10.

And you're as wrong about me receiving a text message from
PlanetCalling thanking me for subscribing to their service as you are
about virtually everything else you've written.

I've contacted PlanetCalling. They don't appear to have any record of
me even subscribing to their service.

So, I've been charged a fiver for a premium rate text message that
con-con giffgaff have no record of me requesting and the sender has no
record of sending.

Of course this matter is (hopefully) being investigated by
PhonepayPlus. Let's hope they get further with it than I've been able
to.

It's not so much a matter of me being lazy, it's just that I knew
everyone would pass the buck and deny knowledge and responsibly.

And, at the end of the day, the onus is on con-con giffgaff to bill
accurately and deal with problems, such as this, when they crop up.

Copy of email received from PlanetCalling:

Good afternoon Martin,

May I just advise that I passed this onto our website technician to
check as I cannot see any active or cancelled subscription under you
mobile phone number provided. Can I ask if you have an RBID number so
we can check this on the system to try and find proof of a charge on
your number.

Can I also just inform you that for you to be charged a premium rate
someone must have text our service to subscribe as we do not have the
facility to randomly send the text with the service details without
subscription first. If you have any pin numbers which were sent to
you, which you should have if you have been charged, can you also
forward this through.

Unfortunately without either of these, there is no record of you
subscribing on our system, so there is no proof you have been charged
for us to refund you.

Regards

Amy

So what does the message you received actually say?
