I haven't - I'm not really clear on what it means and what I might
lose....

Well, as with your Mac you can upgrade the OS either by adding the
update 'on top' of the existing OS (& its programs, settings, etc), or
by returning the device to a 'virgin' state, installing the new OS,
/then/ adding your programs/settings back onto the new OS.

From what I read, the latter (backup iPhone, "Restore" to virgin state,
upgrade to 4.0.1, then put your backup back /on top/ of the new OS) is
the way to go with the 3G.

Interesting - I'll try it on the wife's 3G. How do you save more than
1 backup though? As I recall, when I did my upgrade, it staretd with a
backup, which means that it will over-write the backup that I want
with a backup of a freshly-restored iPhone.

Ok I ran out of patience with my 3G ... it is sooooo slooowwwwwww....

I went through the instructions here:
http://lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-downgrade-your-iphone-3g

It worked ...
... BUT ...

I lost ALL of my photos in the Camera Roll :( about 5 of them :((((

It rebooted in Chinese/Japanese and it was a pain finding how to fix
it... though I did.
I had to set up all of my email accounts again
I had to set up my wireless settings again

I lost my Awesome Notes notes... and it won't syn with the backup on
Google Docs any more :(((

But it is WAY FASSSSSSSSSSSTER !!!!!!!!!!!!
