It is only a theoretical tool The sun is an example of a true blackbody, because certainly when you study it's radiaiton, you are not studing reflected radiation, which is not a part of the radiaion of the emmited temperature. It is gaseous and radiating about 6000 degrees at the chromosphere which is just at the surface of the sun. This radiation includes the continous spectra of the atomic gases whcih are produced under presure in which continual ionization of the atoms is taking place. So the sun exibits both emisison lines of the elements, and absorption lines. A detailed analyses of the elements within the sun can be done from these absorption and emmision spectra. The sun being in thermal equilibrium, meaning the natural state of a system that can achieve a constant temperature, radiates according to Planck's distribution law for the individual frequencies and their relative intensity. The atmosphere of the earth is opaque to radiaiton from about 1 micron in the infrared and not far into the ultraviolets beyond visible frequencies. The sun radiates about 1/2 of it;s energy in the visible light band due to it's temperature.and radiation distribution according to Planck's law. The other half of it's total radiated energy is in the thermal and ultraviolet frequencies. The human eye sees to about .75 microns. The frequencies produced in the visible region from rarified gas emision spectra have considerably more energy than thermal frequencies, as they are produced at temperatures that create energies reaching the ionization potential of the atoms in the individual atoms, becuse certainly at these temperatures, all molecules are braken down and only atomic gases are present.
