But even if it is... Well, the software won't. 1024x768 and all what the iPhone OS offers is not bad for software. But even if the OS is the same there's quite a lot that it is enough for. I've found for a long time that people hate PCs. They love what they can do with them, but they actually don't like PCs. Give them something they can do the same things with and do them with a lot less trouble and they will love that thing. Rubbish. From their latest quarterly results: http://www.apple.com/investor/ Click on the link "Q1 2010 Form 10-Q filed January 25, 2010" to download the PDF. Scroll down to page 35 for the detailed breakdown, under the "Net Sales By Product" heading: Desktops (a) 1,692 Portables (b) 2,758 Total Mac net sales 4,450 iPod 3,391 Other music related products and services (c) 1,164 iPhone and related products and services (d) 5,578 Peripherals and other hardware (e) 469 Software, service and other sales (f) 631 Total net sales 15,683 (numbers all in millions of dollars) (a) Includes iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro and Xserve product lines. (b) Includes MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro product lines. (c) Consists of iTunes Store sales, iPod services, and Apple-branded and third-party iPod accessories. (d) Derived from handset sales, carrier agreements, and Apple-branded and third-party iPhone accessories. (e) Includes sales of displays, wireless connectivity and networking solutions, and other hardware accessories. (f) Includes sales of Apple-branded operating system, application software, third-party software, AppleCare, and Internet services. [end quote] Breaking down by percentage of revenue we have: Mac Desktop 10.7% Mac Portables 17.6% iPod 21.6% Other music etc 7.4% iPhone 35.6% Peripherals 3.0% Software etc 4.0% The iTunes store (including music sales and the app store) makes up _part_ of the "Other music related products and services" category. We don't know how much money Apple makes from iPod services and accessories, so that makes total revenue from the iTunes Store somewhat less than 7% of Apple's total revenue. If you include the Apple-branded software category, their direct revenue from software is less than 11.4% of their total revenue. Apple is primarily a hardware company. The iTunes Store (including the App Store) exists mainly to sell more iPods and iPhones (and soon, iPads). -- David Empson dempson(a)actrix.gen.nz |
