Has anyone ever seen a 3rd-Party app for iPhoneOS to reach the shell
like Terminal? If it has Darwin, then shouldn't the shell be
possible? Without it, I can't imagine ever wanting an iPod, iPhone or
iPad.

OK, but the lack of a command-line interface doesn't seem to have hurt
iPhone/iPod much. and analysts agree it won't put a significant dent in
iPad sales, either. Seems the geniuses at Apple figured out a way to
make phone calls and do all sorts of amazing thing without invoking the
command line.

My-iPhone:~ me$ call mother
-bash: call: command not found

My-iPhone:~ me$ phone home
-bash: phone: command not found

My-iPhone:~me$ dial 212-555-1212
-bash: dial: command not found

My-iPhone:~me$ man phone call
No manual entry for phone
No manual entry for call

My-iPhone:~me$

only possible if you jailbreak.

what exactly do you want to do that requires shell access?

If you jailbreak the phone, yes, otherwise now.

I'm sure Steve Jobs will cry himself to sleep atop his enormous pile of
cash.

Well, we have established that you lack imagination...

But I don't see what that has to do with the merits of these devices.
