There have been occasions where my line has been down for a few days.

Plus it's nice to have it on a laptop when on holiday. Kills a few
boring hours.

Especially when doing long-haul flights, and using an offline reader
like MacSoup. Many's the time that I've spent the flight posting, and
then zapped the messages off from an airport while waiting for the next
connection.

The reason that they look similar is because many of them will use the
same forum software. The most common ones, I would say, are vBulletin
(commercial) and phpBB (free).
