Firefox - can't tab to a SELECT list?

Can I plug a firewire USB combo board into a PCI slot without any software under OS X?
Got a B & W G3 OS 10.3.9. I put an Adaptec AUA-3020A Firewire & USB Controller Card. I can get the USB to work consistently but not the firewire. Do I need to add any software to get it to work?
