One of the RSS feeds I'm on, I forget which unfortunately, think things
point to a refresh in October. They're extrapolating from 'a source'
and from the fact the free case offer is only until September 30th.
It's all a bit 'start of 4th quarter' really, which again is typical
business/manufacturing scheduling.

For me, it's just convinced me completely to not buy - I don't like
cases and bits of rubber for phones. I'll re-evaluate in December when
I'm out of contract and see if this October redesign is true, otherwise
I'm out for this generation and will wait until iPhone 5. A shame as
I'd make good use of that improved camera and I also like the screen,
but I don't like the physical appearance of the 4 compared to the 3GS
and on a colleague's at work I can reproduce the problem in moments -
dropping the signal right down to zero just in the normal way I hold
the phone when using apps.

That 0.55% figure is seriously dubious. 0.55% of customers who have
bought AppleCare for a start, so probably not the majority of owners.
Next up is the fact that most already know Apple knows there's a
problem and were waiting on an announcement for them - that's certainly
true of the three people I know who have the phone, none of whom have
called Apple but all of whom are seeing the problem. For balance
though, two of those three say it's not affecting them much in real
life whereas the other one is contemplating taking the refund offer.
And if we further drill into the anecdote, the two who say it's not
affecting them much are in the UK whereas the guy thinking of taking it
back is in the States (moving primarily between Charlotte and New York).

Still, too much noise around this one for my liking and I'm out of the
market for the time being. Being out of the market for just a few more
days means I lose O2's upgrade offer (expires on 27th), so at that
point I may as well wait until Dec to see if any manufacturing changes
happen. If not, roll on iPhone 5.

Cheers,
Ian

Apple do not give away money, they have one focus point and that is to
make money...

The end of September is about right do the lauch in all countries then
update they will have figure they expect for returns and it makes sense
to take any hits on bottom in a new quarter which is a peak quarter
Christmas sales...

If the uptake in other countries due this month is poor then they will
look again....

I didn't buy, bought 2 16 GB 3gs phones at a good price, quite happy
with mine No 1 has to wait for his birthday....

I hate cases and to have use one so the phone works is a definite NO/NO.....

Aa for the shape and feel of the new phone it is horrible.....

I suspect signal strengths in the USA are more problamatic than here in
the UK on the whole we seem to have good signals for majority of the UK
yes there will blackspots, most will be happy with there new iPhone a
few will have issues as this is clearly shown by many complaints...

02 seem to have kept a low profile on this launch and continue to do
so, maybe they saw problems and said lets wait and see, regardless of
the issues there is a waiting list for the latest iPhone people will
buy it just to say they have the latest, for me I will wait....I am in
no hurry now as I a nice useable phone which I know I can sell on ebay
and break even maybe make a small profit, after all 270.00 for brand
new sealed 16 gb 3gs was a good buy.....

It was all a bit inconclusive. No real satisfaction for either the
fanbois or the haterz.

Hmm. I'd like to see that report if you can dig it out.

Same here. The "just use a case and move on" attitude (first of the
blogosphere then of Apple) annoys me because cases cause more faff that
I want from such an expensive purchase. This cable doesn't fit, that car
cradle doesn't work, this dock doesn't work, it ends up bigger than a
3GS, the fit isn't always great, etc etc.

I'm out of contract. I'm going to try to see if I can teach myself to
hold my phone differently (I can't believe I'm writing that) and if not
I'll get a 3GS off eBay. If a redesign comes, I'll trade it back in; if
not, I'll wait for the 5.

Ditto.

Not really fussed about the appearance.

Yeah, same here.

I'm also unhappy about the "one more call dropped per hundred versus the
3GS" figure. If the 3GS only drops one call per thousand then the 4 is
ten times worse.

And those who are not buying the phone because of the problems.

Too much noise (including from Apple) to work out what the problem is
and whether there's a solution other than the iPhone 5. Noise as in "not
signal". It's not clear what's happening.

Perhaps everyone was stunned at the audacity of the attempted Jedi mind
trick. "There is no problem here".
