At one time it was possible to buy a new Honda Civic for less money than what the flagship Mac cost. I know; comparing a Mac and a Civic is apples and oranges (pun not intended). They seem to have deliberately focused on that part of the product range, avoiding the low price, commodity computer products that have almost no profit margin.
